And On to the Next Thing: Idealware Article Series

One of the challenges of launching a big report and planning to then raise funds based on that track record is that there’s a whole lot of time between that report and any reasonable expectation of funding. To keep momentum going and to begin building great content for our eventual software resource powerhouse website, we’re excited to announce an Idealware Article Series. This series will launch in January with an accompanying e-newsletter. We’ll of course focus on software topics: overviews of how to understand and choose software, case studies, and more.

We have a couple great authors and articles lined up already, but we welcome additional help. Have a compelling topic in mind? Want to contribute an article? Interested in partnering with a technology expert to help them structure and write a great piece? Drop us an email.

Tremendous Response to the Online Donation Report

Thanks so much to all of you who passed on or posted or linked to the Online Donations Report. We’ve had a tremendous response, which is very exciting. More than 500 people signed up to view the report in just the first day it was posted, and we’ve gotten many complementary emails about it.

We're thrilled to hear that people are finding it accessible and are really able to put it to good use.

Online Donation Report Published!

We are thrilled to publish our first report – “Donate Now: Selecting an Online Donation Tool”. You can view it here: http://www.idealware.org/donations/.

The report walks through the available software tools to accept credit card donations from an existing website, with considerations, guidelines for choosing, recommended vendors, and detailed reviews of nineteen different tools.

Whew! Now on to the next thing.

The Online Donation Tool Market

While we’re all waiting for the online donation report to be released, I thought I’d write up a few thoughts about what I learned from looking at so many tools. As I mentioned previously, there’s a surprising number of really strong tools. In the report, I recommend 12 of them that are strong choices, based on different organizational needs. Then I list another seven that may make sense given a pretty specific set of needs. While there’s certainly some overlap between all these tools, for the most part they actually have different strengths and models - it might makes sense for most of these different tools to exist. It’s not, however, a market I’d be looking to introduce a new donation tool into.

One of the most striking things is how many of the tools offer integrated email tools or are in the midst of building this functional. Even some of the most clear-cut payment processing specialists are getting into the bulk email realm. If they can do a good job of it, I find this really promising – it shows a focus on what nonprofits actually want to do with donation tools and donation data, rather than a technology-centric focus on the type of infrastructure needed.

Where’s the Online Donations Report?

It’s coming! It’s complete – an overview of how online donation tools work, suggestions on how to choose one, and reviews of 27 different vendors. Believe me, there’s no one who wants to see it published more than me. We’re just putting the finishing touches on Idealware’s organizational structure to make sure that my personal savings aren’t at risk if unfriendly souls sue us over the report.

It should be out within a week. Hopefully you’ll find it worth the wait.
