A Guide to Synagogue Management: Research and Recommendations (Updates for 2014)

In 2012, funded by the UJA-Federation of NY and a consortium of several movements from the Jewish community (including the Orthodox Union, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, and Union of Reform Judaism), Idealware researched and analyzed the synagogue management system marketplace and provided recommendations for a path forward. We published the result of our research, A Guide to Synagogue Management: Research and Recommendations, in January 2013, which looked at 22 different systems from the synagogue management, CRM, donor management, membership management, and church management sectors to see how they compared to the most widely used systems in synagogues.

The world of technology changes quickly. In the year-and-a-half since we released that report , the software has changed. Funded by the same consortium, Idealware researched a partial update to the original report designed to provide a current look at how the nine top systems have—or have not—changed, and to look at new systems on the marketplace.

For the original report, we interviewed a variety of synagogue staffers about what they needed a system to help them do, and compared what they said to see how the systems handled common tasks. We also analyzed how customizable the systems were, and how willing the vendors were to work with either individual synagogues or a consortium of them to alter the system to better fit the needs of synagogues. For this update, we wanted to know about any new, potentially game-changing options on the marketplace, so we conducted additional interviews with several experts in the synagogue management sector.

Whether you’re familiar with the original report or just discovering this for the first time, this update will provide you with the most current information about the software available to help your synagogue manage your constituents. If you haven't already, we suggest you read through the original report to get a better understanding of the systems and the features available before diving into this update.
